A Colorful Journey Through the Washington State Flower at Meerkerk Gardens

On the third Saturday of April, many Washingtonians head to the lakes to celebrate the opening day of the fishing season. However, my wife and I decided to do something different this year. We decided to check out the spring blooms of Washington’s state flower, the rhododendron, at Meerkerk Gardens on Whidbey Island. We packed up our gear, our two adorable puppies, Gia and Bailee, and headed out for a day of adventure.

As we drove to the south end of Whidbey Island, we had to pass through the number one state park in Washington, Deception Pass State Park. Although we had limited time, we managed to stop at Cranberry Lake on West Beach and let Gia do some swimming. It was an opportunity we couldn’t resist as Gia loves swimming for sticks.

After Gia’s playtime at the beach, we headed 45 minutes south to Meerkerk Gardens. The gardens cover 53 acres and boast over 2 miles of trails with different types of rhododendrons. Although we only had an hour to explore, we managed to visit some of the trails and found ourselves surrounded by colorful flowers.

Meerkerk Gardens is an exceptional place for anyone who loves gardens or nature. We filmed our adventure and created a video to share our experience with others. Watch the video, and you will see how beautiful this short but stunning visit was.

If you are a nature lover or garden enthusiast, Meerkerk Gardens on Whidbey Island is a must-visit destination. It’s a great way to experience the beauty of the Washington state flower, the rhododendron, and explore the trails of this lovely garden. Whether you’re local or visiting from out of town, Meerkerk Gardens is worth the trip.
