Exploring Cattle Point on San Juan Island: A Day Trip Adventure

Introduction:
Nestled in the heart of the San Juan Islands, Cattle Point is a hidden gem that promises both natural beauty and historical significance. We recently embarked on an exciting day trip to this captivating location, and we’re eager to share our adventure with you.

Getting There:
We decided to make our journey even more memorable by taking our e-bikes on the Anacortes ferry to San Juan Island. Not only did this give us the freedom to explore the island at our own pace, but it also turned out to be a budget-friendly option. As we boarded the ferry, we were greeted by a spectacular late summer day with bluebird skies and temperatures in the low 70s.

Cattle Point – San Juan National Historic Park:
Our destination was Cattle Point, part of the San Juan National Historic Park. A 9-mile ride from Friday Harbor brought us to this picturesque location. As we approached the bike parking area, we were greeted by an unexpected visitor—a fox, which surprised us by popping out right behind us. Luckily, we captured this memorable moment on video.

Exploring Cattle Point:
Cattle Point is renowned for its retired lighthouse, located at the very southern tip of the island. We took some time to admire this historic structure before heading slightly east to the interpretive area in the park. Here, we indulged in a delightful snack break featuring locally made summer sausage, canned cheese, and triscuits—a perfect way to refuel for our adventure. We also took the opportunity to capture some stunning drone footage of the picnic area and the pristine beaches that stretch out before us.

Beachside Bliss:
After our snack, we embarked on a short walk along the beach, and the crystal-clear waters lapping at the shore left us mesmerized. The beaches here are nothing short of enchanting, offering a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Fourth of July Beach:
On our journey back to Friday Harbor, we made a stop at the aptly named Fourth of July Beach. This hidden gem treated us to another stunning beach experience, complete with breathtaking views of Mt. Baker in the distance. It’s a must-visit spot for anyone exploring San Juan Island.

Farewell in Friday Harbor:
Back in Friday Harbor, we decided to treat ourselves to a delicious appetizer of fried calamari at the Blue Water Bar & Grill. Paired with refreshing iced tea, it was the perfect way to end our adventure-filled day.

Conclusion:
Our day trip to Cattle Point on San Juan Island was nothing short of magical. From the scenic bike ride to the surprise encounter with a fox, the historic lighthouse, and the tranquil beaches, it was a day filled with beauty and wonder. If you’re looking for a memorable day trip in the San Juan Islands, Cattle Point should be at the top of your list.
